Description:
On display from Monday, Nov. 3 through Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Parkland Art Gallery. An artists' reception on Thursday, Nov. 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the gallery lounge features a talk by the Seattle-based graphic designer Art Chantry and music by local drummer and percussionist Michael Power's one-man band "Gig Man's Royal Blues Band." Refreshments will be provided. Including 50 original posters, this exhibit is a must-see for anyone interested in design, pop culture and the music industry. Chantry, represented by Philip Slein Gallery in Saint Louis, is often associated with the promotional materials designed for bands from the Seattle area, Chantry reveals a subversive side of graphic design. He combines low-tech processes including collage and appropriation of early-era advertising imagery to produce his work that smarts of sarcasm and compelling imagery that has been embraced by advertising and continues to influence and define an alternative to high design. Like the do-it-yourself movement, his work pays tribute to the idea that you don't need expensive advertising and equipment to make your message heard. There will also be a Luncheon and Lecture with Chantry on Friday, Nov. 7, noon to 2 p.m. in D-244. Hear this infamous graphic designer speak about his work in detail. He will provide an in-depth discussion about his work and life as an artist. A portion of each ticket sale will support the Parkland Art Gallery. Tickets are $25 per person and should be purchased in advance.
