A University of Illinois physics professor has been awarded the 2007 National Medal of Science for his work in nuclear magnetic resonance.

President Bush is expected to present the award to Professor Charles Slichter in a ceremony at the White House on Sept. 29.

Slichter called it "an enormous honor."

"I know personally a number of people who've received the award. To be part of that list of which they are members is a thrill," he said. Slichter is a research professor of physics and Center for Advanced Study Emeritus Professor of Physics and Chemistry at the UI.
